With the choice of 4MATIC® all-wheel drive, the E-Class can also handle rough weather or slightly bumpier roads with ease. Those who are looking to drive a true luxury vehicle should consider the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
How the 2017 E-Class Was Updated
Compared to the previous model year, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class was thoroughly redesigned while maintaining its character but enhancing luxury and advances. The 2017 E-Class swaps out the somewhat blocky appearance of the 2016 model with a more curvaceous design that distinguishes it from the more affordable C-Class models. The 2017 E-Class has also grown 1.7 inches in width and 2.6 inches in the wheelbase, enhancing vehicle stability and giving you additional rear legroom.
The changes for the 2017 E-Class continue inside with an organic design that strays from the classic Mercedes-Benz design. You will notice sweeping wood trim going between the doors, a 12.3-inch display that can work with a second display, and of course new luxury appointments. While the E 350 with a 302-horsepower V6 engine was the main powertrain in 2016, the 2017 model is the E 300 and runs on a 241-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. The transmission has also gone from a 7-speed automatic to a 9-speed. These changes mean that the newest E-Class models will get better efficiency. The list of standard safety for 2017 has also expanded, with the E-Class adding Active Brake Assist, PRESAFE® Sound, and Crosswind Assist.
Get to Know the History of the E-Class
With the most recent changes to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class in mind, take a look at how it has evolved over the years. The E-Class is actually based on the Mercedes-Benz Ponton from 1953, which was closer to a unibody structure than previous models. It was incredibly spacious inside but modest on the outside with a 52-horspeower engine. This was followed by the 1961 Fintail, the 1968 Stroke-8, the 1977 Wedge, and finally the 1986 E-Class, which was the first time this name actually appeared. This model was completely new and it looked it, with high-strength steel and a design that was lighter, yet stiffer. This first E-Class model had a multilink rear suspension to enhance ride quality, a sloping front grille for better aerodynamics, and new engines. The lineup was expanded to include a second sedan in 1987 and a coupe in 1988.
The 1996 E-Class models stood out with their four elliptical headlamps, increase in size, and new aerodynamic skin. The E-Class continued to grow with the 2003 model year, which began another generation. Interestingly enough, this was the first model in the class since 1985 that actually had two windshield wipers. The cabriolet arrived in 2011, rounding out the lineup, and Mercedes-Benz has made enhancements to technology, efficiency, and more throughout the intervening years.
