How the Current GLC Came to Be

Looking up the history of the Mercedes-Benz GLC will make you think that this is a completely new model with just two model years under its belt. In reality, however, the 2016 GLC was simply a rebranding of the familiar GLK, with a few changes to note. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC arrived as part of the brand’s new naming structure, with the “C” in the name indicating that this SUV lines up more closely with the “C-Class” models if you were to compare it to a sedan. With the naming change for the 2016 model year, Mercedes-Benz also made a few key updates to the 2015 GLK it was replacing. While the GLK may feel old fashioned, the GLC feels modern and stylish. Other noteworthy changes for the 2016 GLC’s new generation and name included a larger infotainment system, more interior space and cargo room, an automatic active suspension, an available 14 speaker system of Burmester sound, available Wi-Fi capabilities, and the available hands-free liftgate. The GLK already offered advanced driver-assistive and safety features.

You can get a better feel for how the Mercedes-Benz GLC evolved by looking at the GLK’s history. The GLK debuted during the 2008 Beijing Auto Show, so it only had a single generation. Its styling was strongly influenced by the C-Class, and it had extensive safety features, like nine airbags. There were also four different gas engines throughout its history, one of which was simply an improvement on the previous engine of the same size. There was an update in 2012, including a more efficient version of the GLK.
